Providence deck permit: what you need to know

Plain-English summary, not legal advice. Confirm with the city before you build.

Who issues it

In Providence, building permit applications and plans go to the Department of Inspection and Standards (DIS). Residential work falls under SBC-2, Rhode Island's version of the 2018 International Residential Code with state amendments, and the city's FAQ points to code section R105 for what is exempt. Decks are not on that exempt list.

What DIS asks for on residential projects

The city's residential checklist (June 2025) lists, among other items:

  • a complete building permit application and your contact details
  • construction drawings: plans, elevations, cross sections, structural drawings and a site plan
  • a narrative describing the full scope of work
  • Historic District Commission (PHDC) approval for exterior work in designated historic areas (401-680-8400)
  • Zoning Board relief, if your deck needs it
  • owner and contractor responsibility forms

The checklist also reminds you to call Dig Safe (1-888-344-7233) before digging footings.

Tips before you hire

  • Ask each builder who prepares the drawings and pulls the permit, and whether that's in the price.
  • If you live in a local historic district, ask whether they've been through PHDC review before.
  • Check their RI contractor registration.
